......hopefully, this will quickly diffuse the sense of 'doom', of late......

Uhh, Mark thinks he can hire a developer for 60K/year, and he thinks the Facebook newsfeed is good. That sounds like doom to me. :-)

The other disadvantage to this is that there are now plenty of other social networking sites that do not ask for money. Not that I think it is unreasonable to ask, but more that too many people take the easiest path. If one waits to raise the money, and the problems persist in the mean time, Tribe will lose more active people. The people who chat and blog the most tend to be more impatient when the site is down. I've found that many of the very active people in my tribes have gone to other site already.

I don't have the answer, but something more heroic, more significant has to happen to woo these people and people like them, back. I like Tribe and want to stay, but all the people I like to interact with are leaving or have left.

        :(

          Charging is doom, indeed.

Look, the posters generate the content. Without content, there is no tribe.

Tribe gives us the space to post said content; without space, no tribe.

Both sides contribute equally -- one side cannot charge the other side for their contribution.

            it wouldn't be mandatory.

            please read it again.

I think the voluntary nature was clear, but as with anything voluntary, it generally comes with a tricke, and right now we are in need of more than a trickle if Tribe is to be saved. ...IMHO.

if he calls in anyone in to help him make changes they will more than likely say charge for advertisemsnt and discourage spamming and free advertisement of other networks and personal webpages without a nonimal fee.
That is what common sense says to me because there are paid advertisements here and there are many event things posted by member and people post upcoming workshops and such .

I know it sounds unpleasant and leaves a taste in my mouth to type it.

...if one tenth of the 'burner biz' peeps kicked in....something....maybe that would turn the corner.....

Nah, not at all. The traffic/market wouldn't support that.

Tribe was getting some revenue for a while from sucking in third-party job listings, but that seems to have stopped.

It does seem logical that with all the Google people that go to Burning Man every year.....and surely there should be a few wealthy peeps on tribe.......and isn't tribe in the Bay Area, kind of a mecca for venture capitalists........etc, etc, etc that there wouldn't really be a "need" for individuals to kick in dough. HOWEVER, in order to get to that place, a DEMAND needs to be voiced. A value needs to be assesed in order for people with money to see that tribe is worthy of breaking out the check book. That's how these things work.
