with the recent threads being rather negative with respect to mods I thought perhaps there may be something to gain from exploring who and why we regards certain mods as good.....
in my own experience I found blue-j ( people.tribe.net/blue-j ) the moderator for the evolution and evolutionary psycology tribes to moderate well when threads became or threatened to become abusive and similarly a good poster and comentator in his own right.
perhaps if we explored the qualities that make a good moderator we could all gain something useful.....
any other nominations???

Re: who are the good mods?
Wed, June 24, 2009 - 6:56 PMvery fair
go to their tribes ancd contribute knowledge as well as discussion topics
never namecall or denigrate another
allow differences of opinion
help to discuss when 2 people apparently have different understandings of somethign when a conflict occuyrs
will PM with readers to discuss
do not delete things with no reason and very rarely delete things
if they do delete it is by request or from a major troll or explosion -

Re: who are the good mods?
Thu, June 25, 2009 - 11:12 PMI agree about Rev Ro being a good mod. She's likely the best among the public tribes I visit. You can tell she's present everyday and has the qualities you list, cathyq. She keeps on coming up with interesting things to discuss and she responds to the threads others start, too.
Aunt Bea is also a great mod. She also is present in her tribe. She commands great loyalty there. She has a great sense of humor.
She is also very fair with people, tolerating all kinds (probably more than I would) and rarely deletes things. She gives warning before removing a post or, on rare occasion, a person. Her tribe Ask, Aunt Bea has been trolled a lot in recent months, and she hasn't shut down the troll(s), but somehow managed to keep (most) people happy in her tribe even with a strong troll presence.
She starts welcome threads on each and every avatar that joins her tribe in a uniquely interesting way. Her tribe is always very active. -

Re: who are the good mods?
Fri, June 26, 2009 - 4:30 PMI dropped a K&N filter into my car. I've noticed an increase in HP and mileage. I'd say that was a good mod.

Mon, June 29, 2009 - 6:16 PMGood mods:
Bobzilla
Elaine
BryTee
Those are with Burningman-associated tribes which are notoriously difficult to moderate. -

Mon, June 29, 2009 - 6:17 PMOh yes, add greenman 23. I happen to like his style. Very informative. And he knows huge amounts about the subject (Agricultural Soil Science) -

Tue, June 30, 2009 - 9:48 AMthanks Rhino for the vote of support...
but as I started this thread and ASS is a very small and specialist tribe...
I'm a bit of a minnow
that said the point of the thread was to illicit what made a good mod... so far it looks like what most of us would suspect... balanced, informed and detached...
good mods know their subject or at least know the extent of their knowledge in it and realise that others are not as knowledgeable ... whereas other make you look a fool in comparison... being able to laugh at both is therefore essential.

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: who are the good mods?
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 9:59 AMyou actually mean elicit
illicit is more or less meaning illegal
as in illicit drugs
I cant type, but I know word meanings. Those similar words drive everyone crazy. -

Re: who are the good mods?
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 1:27 PMThey do, cathy.
I've always said, for those two particular words, that to elicit a response from plants you feed it, and to get an illicit response from plants you smoke it. -
