Dealing with Rogue Moderators

topic posted Sun, July 29, 2007 - 10:35 PM by
Hi Folks

I recently got booted from the Movie Quotes Tribe after protesting that the moderator deleting content (that did not violate TOU in MHO). That’s how I found this tribe looking for advice and answers about that situation..

I decided just to get over being kicked out and forget it.

However I now can see that someone else in the Tribe has called for a new moderator on the same grounds. I think the current moderator may delete this thread… Could you please check it… moviequotes.tribe.net/thread/...7893260a

It is also interesting to note that the same mod moderates a tribe with 124 members that is three years old and yet has no posts ???? morford.tribe.net/ (the one post is from someone i was speaking to about this....)

I would also say I have tried to discuss this with the mod who does not answer my polite messages and they also will not let someone in who asked to join – reason –they are on my friends list…

Is there any way of dealing with a Rouge Moderator ?

Can a custodian be put in to run a transparent and democratic vote ?

Start up a competing tribe and invite the folks in the other tribe to join.

If it's really a shitty place, they'll bail out like rats with AIDS, and the Mod will be stuck with nothing but sticky palms.

Yeah - but the movie quotes tribe has so much great content and I would hate to see more of it deleted.. so should tribe.net

Interestingly someone in Movie Whores started a thread guessing from what movie a quote comes from and it had 141 replies in about 15 days - the Movie Quote Tribe would have had similar activity but has been close to dead. Those participating also seemed to change over night...

We will see what happens and thanks for your thoughts...

And I guess one of my other motivations is to try to support Jim's call for a new mod and try to protect hin from getting booted for it... I would definitely also rejoin the Tribe - the current mod will not respond to my requests to do so with any sort of reply - even a " you will never get back in as long as I am moderator" - he just ignores me.. (quiet sob and tear :)

I have responded in that thread too.

I guess I posted this thread to ask the general question about dealing with Rogue Mods (but it would be dishonest to say I did not have an individual in mind) but the question should be answered from a general point of view rather than addressing my problems. I did put my problem behind me – but have discovered there are others not happy with the deletes as well and hence I guess I am not alone in my unhappiness about the individual moderators style. I have had this problem before but have always been able to talk through it.

I read EH and post in it occasionally – that probably where you know my from – the only “depression” type tribe I am in is Bipolar (which I don’t have but family member does) so I am just in that tribe to learn and support others..

maybe it is time to discuss etiquette.

i have a few tribes, but i am most careful with the largest one. every use of the delete key is carefully thought out. i say on the tribe itself and by pm if necessary that i will delete off topic threads; namely advertisements posted in the threads. i think it is important to leave the content alone for the most part.

that said, i don't know about taking the ability to delete content or kick out or block people. it is my perogative as the moderator to run my tribes as i see fit. that is why anyone can start a tribe of their own and make up their own rules.

I believe that you can make up a trib eof your own and that moderators may make up many rules.

If a member of tribe.net sees something whihc he/she thinksis way out of line I believe he/she may report so to tribe.net. The tribes are still hosted and posted on tribe.net.

In thi scase,,, the words in question bothered me and i actually PMd the moderator about them FIRST I did later report the owords to tribe.nst.

Later thremoderator wrote a strong admonishment that it was completely inappropriate and unacceptable to EVER report anyting to tribe.net from HER tribe. I disagree. Sh econtinued with stating clearly that I had ruined? her and the tribe's reputation and embarrassed the initial writer.

I am upset about the issue and teh moderator's choice to then refuse that readers may report anything to tribe.net.

NOTICE I could revel the tribe but I am choosing mostly to discuss the issue... which as time goes by becomes less of an issue. I did choose to drop out of the tribe.. the topics are not of interest to me as they seem to be. I wish I had remained to discuss this issue a bit but I didn't. I returned her words back to tribe.net to deal with. I have only reported anything to tribe.net 2 times in my 4 yeears here... .never flagged anything for content although sometimes things hav ebothered me. I prefer free speech as much as it can be under guidelines.

M., you're never rogue, you're just fussy. I've seen Lisa take a tribe on what I felt to be a potential death spiral and will-it-back to being positive, just with persistance. Sometimes, particularly with the politics and religion megatribes, this is like facing down a hurricane. I continue to put it in perspective, having been a 'witness' to situations much larger than Tribe I lurk on more anthropologically than for any other reason. I can't believe I have these options to start brand new boards- easily searchable and usually filled with peeps with a reliably higher propensity for humor than outside our lil social resource. I really don't see the ready solutions we have preinstalled on Tribe anywhere else.

BTW, am I the only one here to catch the sychronicity...Bloke....Rogue....where are the rest of the XMen??

I had the same issue in another tribe, the mod deleted the posts for no other reason, then she didnt' like the person posting em.

Don't know that there is much you can do, technically, it's their tribe, so it's their rules. I will tell you, that a few members left the tribe because of it. Nobody likes a bully.

              <<it's their tribe, so it's their rules>>

But is it ? Or are they simply a custodian acting on the groups behalf... I guess it depends on the tribes and posts... but once you get a couple of hundred members posting regularly - "ownership" has certainly moved from the mod to the group...

              So endeth the lesson LOL
              :)

I think 'custodian' when many people post and contribute.

But this seems to be a very touchy one for some mods.

I am very impressed with Rich, the mod of extreme honesty tribe.. lots to discuss there and by many and he remains very cool and generally unbiased, for the most part.

                  FOR SURE !!!!!!!!!!!

He also has the ability to warn/admonish without it getting to personal. I wonder if he also uses personal messages to manage people & conflict there... He has a Huge Job in moderating the tribe (indeed in even just reading it all... I doubt he could do that... some threads get very long and tedious and I stop reading some). Rich is very non-interventionist WITHOUT washing his hands of TOU and sensitivity to peoples feelings. He rarely deletes - but more commonly wades in with a comment or warning. He has started threads suggesting that discussion is boring and/or inappropriate and asked other members to post new ones to shift attention. I think many could learn something a thing or too from Rich... I have...

The !*Politics*! tribe is a mess of mean-spirited and anger-filled shrieking...it's pretty unpleasant at times...actually, mostly unpleasant...

However, I have to hand it to Inna the moderator for doing as decent of a job as she can with the hand she's been dealt...

I'll have to check out the Extreme Honesty tribe...could you link it, please?

I like the politics tribe. Rik can be a jerk and Cliff is a real treat but I still like it. Just pick and choose the threads you want. Politics is mean spirited and anger filled. Why would the politics tribe not be similar. I like to think it is a forum for positive change in the world regardless of what anyone else thinks. It's a beacon of hope of sorts. Otheriwse why participate really?
