Re: how does one become a moderator?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 1:39 PMCathy, I'm pretty sure it's an easy process for a mod to select a replacement mod, and that it doesn't involve the Powers That Be at Tribe. When I was selected by my predecessor, it seemed to happen overnight. In cases where no current mod is in place, i think it becomes more difficult and DOES require Tribe PTB intervention. In any case, if you care to test my theory, I'm going to create a new Tribe and then try to make you Moderator- does that sound good?
Hopefully Helpfully,
Major Tom -

Re: how does one become a moderator?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 1:45 PMCathy, if you want to test my theory, you can join the Tribe I just created at tribes.tribe.net/tradingmoderators
Once you join, I'll transfer Moderatorship over to you, or try to!! Then you can delete the Tribe.
Testingly,
Major Tom -

Re: how does one become a moderator?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 2:06 PMHmmm, interesting- I can't seem to figure out how to delete a Tribe I created/moderate- very strange!! Anyone got any advice? I guess I can change the name to something I actually want to start an ongoing Tribe for!! :)
Blatheringly,

Re: how does one become a moderator?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 9:17 PMThere is no way to delete a tribe once created. But, yes, you can change the name and description to whatever you want the tribe to be, after your experiment.
And I believe changing moderators is as simple as Major Tom first stated. It happens as soon as the moderator selects the next member to be the moderator.
There is a bug affecting some tribes. But not all. When the bug affected the private tribe I was selected to be moderator in, someone else tested the function in their tribe and it was working fine. But, still, I would be cautious about changing moderators in a tribe that is important to you, it could possibly malfunction.
Cathy G, if you are trying to be appointed moderator to a tribe that says "choose a new moderator", good luck. It could take a long time. You need to keep pestering help@tribe.net with e-mails, and maybe, with luck, they will get around to it. -

Re: how does one become a moderator?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 9:38 PMChristie and Theo, thanks for the input!! I'm learning new things every day!! Christie, if you're willing, can you join the Tribe I created so I can test our hypothesis? You can then change it back to me so you don't have a little test Tribe to look after!! If you don't want to, no biggie, I'm just curious!!
Testingly, and Appreciatingly,

Re: how does one become a moderator?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 9:51 PMYeah, sure, I'll give it a test try.
And here is something else I just read that pertains to this conversation.
tribes.tribe.net/goldstarc...22b7e2448b
Cathy, if you need Tribe staff to appoint you the moderator of a tribe with no moderator, try the TOU guy. -

Re: how does one become a moderator?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 10:03 PMOK, looks like Christie was correct- she joined the test Tribe and I just made her moderator!! So new Tribes don't have bugs, I guess!!
Thanks for the help, all!! Learning is fun!!
Educationally,
Major Tom
PS: Christie- when you can, select me back as Moderator (if you want!) so we can confirm!! -

Re: how does one become a moderator?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 10:14 PMYes I was moderator for a few minutes. The change happens instantly as soon as the moderator selects a new moderator, just as it's supposed to.
The tribes that are having difficulty changing moderators are the tribes with a large number of members. How large is large, is now the question. Any ideas on how to test that, anyone?
Also, I'd be cautious changing moderators in a private tribe. There was at least one private tribe that ran into a problem when it decided to trade moderators. We could test that next if you want, Tom. Set the tribe to private and then try to make me moderator. If we loose it, it will be not so bad since you haven't done anything with it yet. -

Re: how does one become a moderator?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 10:17 PMYou are brilliant and talented, Christie!! I'll change it to Private and then trade in a few seconds!! Experimenting is fun!!

Re: how does one become a moderator?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 10:25 PMYes, I am now the moderator of it. So, no bugs in changing moderators of private tribes either. Fantastic!
I'm sending it back to you now. -

Re: how does one become a moderator?
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 10:41 PMYou're very welcome. I enjoyed testing this function, too. I'm working on a new tribe, writing the description and guidelines with the intended moderator, and we intend to start it next week or so. It will be a private tribe and I feel much better knowing moderators can be changed if needed without worry.
Thank you for this opportunity. I might as well hang out in your new tribe for awhile, too, see if you turn it in to something that interests me. :-)
