If any of you are about to appoint another person to be moderator of the tribe you moderate be prepared for a malfunction. If you do try it, leave settings such as members can invite other people on, in case it doesn't work.
It seems there is a bug in the system when one tries to appoint a new moderater the last couple of days. Yesterday I read that someone had a similar situation to what I today have experienced. It may be happening to private tribes only, but I have a feeling it is happening with all tribes, based on the situation I read in the tribe Shamanism (which I'm not in but was reading out of concern with how the outgoing mod was being treated by the rest of the tribe.)
In Shamanism, a public tribe, the moderator wanted to appoint a new mod, and I'm thinking she did indeed do that rather than just leave without appointing anyone, which is what I thought happened when I looked at it yesterday.
In my case, I was just appointed moderator of a private tribe, a temporary position while the mod went away for a little while and wouldn't be checking the internet. We thought this was a wise move. Many of you in this tribe can probably relate, as we are wishing that SFSlim had appointed another moderator during the time of his absence.
So in the private tribe I'm in the moderator attempted to appoint me as moderator while she was away. I received a PM saying that I am now the moderator, but in fact I have no moderator controls for the private tribe, and the mod spot says "choose a new moderator".
Moderators, this is my alert. Don't change mods right now, until this bug has been fixed, or your tribe will be left unmoderated. And I don't know how long it can take to get a mod put back in place once this has happened.
If you are still tempted to appoint a new moderator and the tribe is moderated or private, make sure you at least have the settings set so that members can invite others. That way the tribe can be accessible through the current members, in case it takes a long time to fix this bug.

Re: A bug in changing moderators
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 1:39 PMChristie - if you do not have a moderator for a private tribe, and it's been established in a thread that you should be the moderator - send an email to help@tribe.net
This is not necessarily a bug. But you should also post to the thread in bugs regarding the Shamanism tribe and describe your issue. The Shaman tribe moderator issue is completely different than your issue - see the link that I posted in the bugs tribe. It appears that because the membership is so large and when you click the option to chose a new moderator, it wants to put all the members on one page (or something like that) it is timing out and won't allow you.
so, two very different things here.
I'll post the link to the bugs tribe thread that I mention. -

Re: A bug in changing moderators
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 6:10 PMOkay, it looks like the two issues are different. Still I'd say there is a bug in changing moderators, whether it's when you try to select someone or once you have selected someone and then it doesn't go through and the original mod is no longer there either.
I posted in the Bug Report tribe after posting here, as you saw, and I put it in the Shamanism tribe mod switch thread because it seemed similar to me, and we are always being encouraged to add to existing threads there rather than start a new one. And I thought that Jeannie had probably tried to appoint a new mod (Sham was able to appoint a mod - Jeannie - since he wrote that thread.) I am familiar with Jeannie from a different tribe, so I assumed she would appoint a moderator before leaving the tribe. But she might have just left the tribe, without appointing if she couldn't access the page.
So you are right in that the bug I am facing is different than the mega tribe situation when trying to change moderators. But if you go look at the thread again you'll see that someone else has posted and is facing a similar mod change problem. Similar to the mega tribe or similar to my issue, I don't know.
Anyway, I would've been happy to see someone post a warning if they had issues like this in this tribe for moderators. If it's been happening to others already, had I known about it I would have told my moderator not to give me the co moderator position and take over while she was away.
Wildapache, when you say it's working for you, did you mean you actually switched moderators to someone else, and they became the mod? And switched back again, I presume? Because that would be a good test to know about. -

Re: A bug in changing moderators
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 7:15 PMThanks for the heads up. I haven't been watching the bugs tribe and it's helpful to know that there might be a problem possibly with private tribes and possibly with large tribes.
I hadn't planned to give away modship of my large tribe but if it comes up I will make sure they've fixed that first. -

Re: A bug in changing moderators
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 8:10 PMOh, thanks for letting me know.
Maybe mine is an individual problem, then. Weird.
Or maybe it has something to do with it being a private tribe. Maybe in order to make a switch it could be done by switching a private tribe to public, appointing the new moderator, and then it could be changed back to private again.

Re: A bug in changing moderators
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 10:44 PMI'm glad that you said something, Christie.
It appears to be a private tribe problem. Keep bugging them at help@tribe.net..........they will listen to you. Squeaky wheels gets the grease these days. Unfortunate - but true. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: A bug in changing moderators
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 10:54 PMThanks Heather. If I don't see it resolved from my first e-mail, I'll write another. And if it's a private tribe bug then I'm glad I thought it through enough now to not switch moderators again while in private mode when the original mod gets back.

Re: A bug in changing moderators
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 10:52 PMI am in the same tribe as Christine..
What is annoying is that the mod was present and appointed her the new moderator, she got a notification message - but instead of swapping - it simply left us with no moderator...and the "choose a new moderator" link...
