When asking to join...

topic posted Thu, August 18, 2005 - 6:55 PM by  SFSlim
As it reads in the tribe description above, when asking to join this tribe, please tell me which tribe(s) you currently moderate.

I'd say about 70% of the membership requests I receive lack this single, simple piece of information.

Thank you very much.

Depends on who gets the invite..if it's someone I actually know or have met in RL....it's more personalized....

If it's a random person I know on tribe and not very well...if there's no event coming up, I just type up a short blurb about SFGirls Who wanna Meet Girls--I sometimes copy and paste the tribe description in there..

Usually when I send out invites to the tribe--it's because of an event is coming up and I usually copy and paste the URL to the event listing or say something about it...

My other tribe: Girls 4 Men Being with Men--I rarely send out invites unless that person expresses interest in that topic in another tribe...(I'm trying to keep guys at bay for obvious reasons)...

      Just my lil thing..

"70% of the membership requests I receive lack this" indicates that you might need to do something different to yield different results... just a suggestion.

My issue with requests is not having to do with request themselves and nothing that tribe can do about..

the SFBay Girls who wanna meet girls...well it's a womyn only tribe..so I pretty much gotta check profiles and since the request I have no choice than to hit deny or accept..I have to send a separate message to that person asking if they're male or female if it's not listed in their profile...(I also check for location)....

Be kinda cool if they had a request for more info or send message button next to accept & Deny

      That's about it

One thing that you might do is that if somebody does not remember to include the tribes they moderate is decline, and then ask what tribe they are in. When they indicate which ones, invite them in.

You're right of course, and I've thought about that. But what I keep coming back to is this:

The fact that the tribe description (which, in the case of this tribe, is admirably succinct) is itself re-displayed on the "request to join tribe" screen (what you see once you've clicked on the "join tribe" button on the main page).

And if someone can't be bothered to answer one simple question (that they've now seen twice: once on the main tribe page and again on the less-cluttered "request to join page") than I have to wonder how interested they really are in participating in this tribe.

I dunno... I think providing the name of the tribe(s) that one moderates is a perfectly reasonable request for membership in this tribe. As barriers to entry go, it's darn low, and only in place to save me the hassle of having to manually check every single tribe on an applicant's profile to see which ones (if any) they moderate.

The good news is that with the fancy shmancy new profiles, the tribes they moderate are listed with a big ol' "M" next to them.

I would agree that it is a reasonable request. Unfortunately, even keen people are not always very observant.

hmm, you're right it doesn't seem like much to ask...although since I did include the name of the tribe I moderated(yep only one at the time) when I requested to join and you took like 2 months to approve it...I have to say it doesn't seem like that much to ask for that to be a bit less time.

Maybe it would be less work for you if you just declined anyone who didn't include that and if they cared enough to ask why you could copy paste the tribe description to them.

The tribes I moderate now (at least the ones that aren't private, and that I can think of:o)
